One of my favorite scriptures is in Ephesians 6, where it talks about putting on the armor of God. There’s a particular verse that means a lot to me. Verse 13: “Wherefore, take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”
The first time I read this scripture after getting sick, I was overwhelmed by the new meaning it held. There are days when it’s all I can do to stand, and I never realized that standing is doing something. I was so used to being able to do everything before getting sick and took for granted the very fact that I could just stand. Now, many times when I am able to stand up in the morning, my mind recalls this scripture and I am filled with gratitude.
But it doesn’t just apply to physically standing–it can apply to everyone.
Stand up, stand out! The world today accepts and encourages anything and everything, whether it’s right or not. When I hear this scripture, I think also about standing up for what I believe in.
As a kid, I thought maybe I’d have one of those ‘moments’ where I was with people at school and had to say “That’s not right!” or something to that effect. What I didn’t realize was that standing up doesn’t always refer to experiences like that. Standing up can be serving, setting an example, sharing the joy of Christ.
What sometimes makes us not want to stand up is that in today’s world, standing up is standing out. Another quote I LOVE says “Why try to fit in when you were born to stand out?” We are all God’s children and he wants more from us today’s “norm.” He wants us to set the standard, he wants us to “Arise and shine forth, that [our] light may be a standard for the nations.” (D&C 115:5) He wants us “Let [our] light so shine before men, that they may see [our] good works and glorify [our] Father which art in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
“You were made to fly. You were meant to shine…child of light” (Child of Light, by Mindy Gledhill)
So remember to stand, to let your light shine. You are a child of God and He loves you. He wants you to stand for Him.
